Does Insurance Cover Nutrition Counseling?

If you've never worked with a dietitian before, there's a good chance you assume it's a cash pay expense reserved for people with money to spare on wellness extras. For most Everwell clients, they are paying nothing out of pocket to work with one of our dietitians.

The Short Answer: Yes, Insurance Usually Covers Coaching

Everwell Nutrition is in-network with United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UMR, Community Care, Ambetter, and Health Choice. For most clients with one of these plans, nutrition counseling visits are fully covered, meaning $0 out of pocket for the visit itself.

We're also continuing to expand our insurance contracts, so even if your specific carrier isn't on that list, it's worth asking — coverage changes, and we'd rather check than assume the answer is no on your behalf.

We are located in Oklahoma, but we work with individuals across the United States depending on state licensure laws. We can see clients across state lines including Colorado, Arizona, California, and Arkansas.

Why People Don't Realize This Is Covered

Many insurance plans cover medical nutrition therapy (MNT) as a preventative benefit. So, if you meet certain preventative criteria (which most people do!), then there is a high likelihood that your insurance plan will cover your sessions with us.

The other reason people miss this: they assume "nutrition counseling" means a single generic session, not the kind of ongoing nutrition counseling Everwell actually provides. Insurance coverage applies to the ongoing counseling relationship, not just a one-time visit.

What About Testing and Add-Ons?

Insurance-covered visits are the foundation of working with Everwell — every client, whether insurance-covered or cash-pay, starts there. Additional functional testing (like GI Map, HTMA, or expanded bloodwork panels) is typically a cash-pay add-on layered on top of that covered foundation, since this kind of testing generally isn't billed through insurance the way a basic visit is.

We price these add-ons intentionally to keep them accessible, because we believe this testing shouldn't be reserved only for people who can afford functional medicine out of pocket.

How to Actually Find Out What You'll Pay

The most reliable way to know your specific costs is to let us check for you. When you fill out an interest form, Rachel personally calls to talk through your goals and your insurance benefits before your first appointment, so you're not walking in blind or discovering a surprise bill after the fact.

Don't Let Assumptions About Cost Stop You

If the only thing standing between you and getting real help has been the assumption that it's not covered or not affordable, that assumption is worth checking rather than accepting. Fill out an interest form and we'll find out together what your coverage actually looks like.
