Why You Keep “Starting Over” (And What to Do Instead)

Something that I see come up over and over again working as a dietitian/nutrition coach is clients feeling like they’re doing “all the right things,” but they’re not seeing results. Or they start strong, fall off, and then feel like they have to start over again the next week.

Most of the time, this has nothing to do with lack of knowledge. It really comes down to habits and mindset.

The Phase Where Most People Quit

One of my favorite self-improvement books is Atomic Habits by James Clear. In the book, there’s something he labels the “valley of disappointment,” which is basically that phase where you’re showing up, you’re trying to be consistent, you’re doing the things… but you’re not seeing much change yet.

This is where most people quit, because it feels like it’s not working. But in reality, your results are just delayed. I tell clients all the time that progress isn’t linear. Unfortunately it is often like a zig zag line, great some weeks and then non-existent the next.

The people who see results are the ones who stay consistent through the “valley of disappointment,” when it feels like nothing is happening.

You Don’t Need More Motivation, You Need Better Habits

It’s easy to think, “I just need a better meal plan,” or “I need more motivation,” or “I need to be more disciplined.” But most of the time, it’s not that. It’s about having small, repeatable habits that you can actually stick to. Not extreme changes. Not starting over every Monday. Not doing everything perfectly for a few days and then falling off. Rather, consistently doing the basics well.

A lot of people say things like, “I’m going to meal plan more,” or “I’m going to drink more water,” or “I’m going to work out more,” but that’s not specific enough to turn into a habit. A real habit needs a time and a place.

Something like, “On Saturday at 10am, I’m going to plan out my meals for next week,” is much more actionable and much more likely to actually happen.

Most people rely on willpower, but willpower is unreliable. It works when you’re motivated, and then it fades. It is important to set up your environment in a way that makes your habits easier. That might look like keeping easy protein options available to make sticking to your nutrition plan easier, deleting social media off your phone to avoid the mindless scroll, or not keeping certain foods in the house if you know they are hard for you to moderate. You aren’t depriving yourself, rather you are setting yourself up for success.

The “All-or-Nothing” Trap

This is something that keeps a lot of people stuck and where I lived in my own health for several years. You eat one meal that’s “off plan,” and suddenly it turns into, “Well, I already messed up, I’ll just start over Monday.” That pattern will keep you spinning your wheels. No one is going to be perfect in their pursuit of health and the quicker you can prioritize consistency over perfection, the quicker you will get to your goal.

Follow the 90–10 approach where about 90% of your choices are aligned with your goals, and 10% is flexible. You don’t need to be perfect to see results, but you do need to be consistent.

Let's Sum Things Up

If you feel like you keep “starting over,” I want you to simplify things. You don’t need to be more extreme, more perfect, or completely overhaul your life. You need to pick one habit, make it specific, and do it consistently.

And if things feel slow right now, or like it’s not working yet, you’re probably just in that valley of disappointment. Stay there a little longer. That’s usually right before things start to change.
